Firearms Discussion List
Firearms Discussion List Info Message
*** SAVE THIS MESSAGE AND READ IT TWICE ***
The Firearms discussion is a list for gun enthusiasts. You need not own
any guns to be a part of the list. Anything and everything regarding guns
can be discussed, from purchases to reloading. If the topic heads away
from
*firearms-related topics* including non-firearms-related politics, please
take it to private email.
This list’s server is a listserv, an automated mailing list manager. All
subscribe/unsubscribe requests are processed automatically. Listserv
commands ARE SENT TO THE LISTSERV, not to the list. Please remember this!
This list is unmoderated. That means that anything you send to the list
can and will be delivered to all list members without any approval or
editing.
EDITING: It is important to realize that many members, especially those
located in places outside the United States, pay by the byte for their
email.
Therefore, it is IMPORTANT to EDIT your responses by REMOVING the material
(from the original) that you are NOT responding to. It is annoying to
everyone, not just the overseas members, to receive a response to a long
message that includes the entire text of that long message, followed by a
brief “me too.”
If you must do this, please be courteous. Take a moment and cut the
original text down, leaving only that part with which contains the essence
of the part you want us to know that you agree with.
It is ESPECIALLY DISCOURTEOUS to include the entire text of a DIGEST with
your response.
When you start to change the subject of your email away from the original
subject, please change your subject line to reflect this. This way, it is
easier to follow a thread. Again, keep it related to firearms.
ADVERTISING: Please keep advertising posts to a minimum. If you are a
business, and you have a website, please list the URL in your signature.
If
you don’t have a website, get one. If you have some great deal to offer
(relating to guns or accessories of course), for a brief period ONLY, send
a short, one time note regarding what you have. If someone is interested,
they can contact you OFF LIST. Please only advertise FIREARMS related
items.
There has been some posts in the past that were far from FIREARMS related.
SIGNATURES: Signatures are cool, and you can say a lot in them, but they
also
waste bandwidth. If you have a PGP Public key, tell us, but DO NOT put it
in your signature. If someone wants it, they can email you for it. Try
to
keep you signature lengths to a minimum, especially “pictures”, again to
save bandwidth. Please remember that some of the list members have to pay
for their Internet connection by bytes transferred, and this just adds
unnecessarily to their costs.
HEATED DISCUSSIONS: Every now and then, someone may post a note that you
don’t agree with. If a flame war develops, TAKE IT OFF THE LIST!!!! If
it
gets personal, TAKE IT OFF LIST!!!!
SPAM AND FORWARDS: SPAM can be defined as any material that is sent to
the
list that is not relevant to the discussion of FIREARMS-related topics.
Please think long and hard before FORWARDING long messages from other
sources. Then, think about it again. If you conclude that the candidate
message is absolutely so important, so relevant to the purpose of this
list
that we NEED to see it; then, *as a bare minimum,* include a SHORT message
at the beginning that let’s the list-members know WHY you believe that the
forward is relevant to the Firearms Discussion list. Otherwise, lacking
some original contribution from you, the FORWARD will just be SPAM. If
you
have a URL for a message, USE IT.
To subscribe to the Firearms list, send email containing the line
subscribe firearms <your first name> <your last name>
in the BODY of the message to <[email protected]>.
Once you have been subscribed, you can send messages to the list by
mailing
to <[email protected]>.
This is a closed list, which means that only subscribed members can post
messages to the list. The address that you send from has to be the exact
same
address you subscribed with. If the two vary at all, your posts will be
rejected. If you have other accounts that you want to post from, you will
need to subscribe to the list with those accounts too. You can set those
to
nomail or to digest to keep traffic on that account down.
Please note well the small but very significant difference between
commands for the listserv and messages to the list.
Should you have a problem requiring human intervention, send mail to
[email protected].
When you first subscribe, you will be receiving individual mailings from
the list. If you prefer to receive the digest, send an email to
[email protected] and in the BODY of the message, type:
set firearms digest
to change your options back to receiving individual mailings, send an
email
with the message:
set firearms mail
When you go away for a while, or don’t want to get email from the list
without unsubscribing and losing all your options you have set, email the
following command to the listserv:
set firearms nomail
To check the status of your subscription, email this command, to the
listserv of course:
query firearms
If you want to unsubscribe, send email to the listserv with the command:
unsub firearms
If you want to find out info on other commands, send a note to the
listserv
with the command:
info refcard
ARCHIVES: The folks at Univ. Texas at Arlington are letting us run the
list
from their computer. At the moment, they are archiving the list and it is
viewable on the web at http://listserv.uta.edu/archives/firearms.html.
Enjoy the list, and stay armed!
