Roswell pawn shop owner shoots would-be robber
By MIKE MORRIS

Two armed robbers picked the wrong store when they held up a Roswell
pawn shop owned by a former sheriff’s deputy armed with his own gun.

About 5:45 p.m. Monday, the two men entered Old Roswell Jewelry and Pawn
on South Atlanta Street and pretended to be looking at merchandise, said
Roswell police Sgt. James McGee.

The men demanded money and jewelry, and forced pawn shop owner Morris
Chappell — a former major with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department
– and his wife, Rebecca, into a back room.

“While in the back room, gunfire erupted and numerous shots were
exhanged between the perpetrators and the owner,” McGee said.

McGee said one of the suspects was shot at least four times, and the
pair fled to a waiting getaway car, “leaving a trail of blood.”

Chappell and his wife “miraculously were not injured,” McGee said.

Police issued a lookout on the car and contacted area hospitals. A short
time later, the suspects and a woman driving the getaway car arrived at
St. Joseph’s Hospital, and hospital officials notified police, who
arrested all three.

The wounded suspect, Alvin Lucas, 18, of Conley, was in surgery today at
St. Joseph’s. McGee said Lucas was in critical condition, but was
expected to recover from his wounds.

The other suspects were identified as Jervier Allen, 23, and 28-year-old
Nadine Mortimer, both of a Roswell Road address in Atlanta.

They were initially thought to be uninjured, but
McGee said that this morning, Allen discovered while showering that he
had been grazed in the upper right thigh, and was taken to Grady
Memorial Hospital.

McGee said the three will be charged with armed robbery and aggravated
assault. They will also face child cruelty charges because there was a
15-month-old boy, believed to be Mortimer’s child, in the car during the
robbery.

The baby was turned over to a grandmother.

After the arrests, police recovered a checkbook and wallet taken from
the pawn shop owner, along with $900 in cash.

Police also recovered two handguns, and those guns, along with the shop
owner’s gun, were sent to the GBI crime lab for ballistic tests.

Chappell will not face any charges, McGee said.
