Florida — Local Update — 1/21/00
As feared, anti-gun local governments in Florida are chomping at the
bit to restrict your rights. Activists from various locations
around the state have begun to notify GOA of these misdeeds.
This is the by-product of the terribly anti-gun revisions made to
the Florida Constitution in the 1998 elections (see alerts — FL for
background at http://www.gunowners.org/sfl0298.htm on the GOA
website). The scare tactics and questionable ethics seen then are
haunting gun owners now.
PLEASE contact the GOA offices either by email or phone/fax if your
locality is trying to institute unwarranted and unwanted
restrictions against your rights. Unfortunately, you are going have
to fight these battles one at a time. GOA will help spread the
word, but we need you to report these local attacks as soon as you
can document them.
BROWARD COUNTY
At present, there is a movement to ban so-called assault rifles in
Broward County. There is a County Legislative delegation Public
hearing scheduled for Tuesday February 1st, at 5:00 p.m. in the City
of Hollywood Commission Chambers, 2800 Hollywood Boulevard in
Hollywood.
Remember that the revision as passed allows for background checks
and other restrictions at the local level, but specifically
prohibits absolute bans against ownership or possession of firearms.
The Legislative Delegation needs to be reminded that they DO NOT
HAVE THE AUTHORITY, according to the present Constitution, to ban
firearms.
If you can attend the meeting and are willing to speak, please call
their offices at 954-357-6555 and tell them you are interested in
addressing the Delegation — if you live in Broward County, you need
to be there!
NORTH PORT AND SARASOTA COUNTY
GOA recently received word that the city of North Port has passed an
ordinance making it a crime to discharge a firearm within city
limits. Apparently there is no exemption for self-defense. We are
investigating and will keep you posted.
A Sarasota County Commissioner has evidently been lobbying the North
Port authorities to fall in line behind a countywide ordinance
instituting the background check and waiting period allowed by the
Constitutional revision.
