Cops uncover bomb factory; Teen faces charges after explosives found in
farmhouse

The Ontario Provincial Police have raided a bomb factory in a rural
Norfolk farmhouse and seized live bombs and other explosive material.
OPP bomb experts and detectives searched the isolated Middleton
farmhouse yesterday and seized explosives, two live bombs they found
buried in a field on the property, at least one firearm and bomb-making
materials.
The live bombs were destroyed by the OPP’s Provincial Emergency Response
Team explosive disposal unit.
Why the bombs were being made is unknown at this time. Police refused to
describe the explosives or say how significant they are.
A 19-year-old man, who occupied the home, was arrested on several
explosives and weapons charges. He is to appear in Simcoe court today.
An officer close to the investigation said neither the RCMP nor the
Canadian Security Intelligence Service are involved “at this time.”
OPP Constable Mark Foster described the suspect as “a young person with
some expertise” and a person who is “very knowledgeable” about
explosives. Foster added that the suspect is not known to police.
He said police searched the home after receiving information from “a
concerned party” Tuesday morning. There is no indication anyone called
police after hearing blasts.
Foster said the home is located west of Simcoe, about halfway between
Courtland and Langton.
Police also discovered and searched two sites in Elgin County, just east
of Aylmer — one on Carter Road and another on Walkers Line — where two
bombs were detonated recently in empty fields with no damage.
The investigation has just begun and it is too soon, says Foster, to
comment on why bombs were being made.
“At this time, it seems to be a case where there is an individual with
an interest in these things,” he remarked.
The man has been charged with mischief endangering life, possession of a
weapon for a dangerous purpose and careless use of a firearm or
ammunition.
The explosives charges: making or possession of explosives for an
unlawful purpose, and intent to cause damage with an explosion.
