LONDON’S GUN CRIME EXPLOSION

Yard called to 256 incidents in a week.

A senior policeman has said that gun crime is “threatening the fabric of London”
with armed officers called to an alarming 256 incidents in one week…….

Deputy Commissioner Ian Blair said that the firearms problem peaked two weeks
ago when armed officers were called to 256 incidents in one week – or 36 a day.

There have also been 19 gun-related murders in London this year, most of which
are the result of continuing drug wars.

Last year armed response vehicles were called to 9,000 incidents in London, a
Scotland Yard spokesman said – an average of 173 gun alerts a week, or almost
25 a day. Yet in all that activity, five shots were fired on four occasions.

“The people of London need the armed police squad”, Mr.Blair said. “The number
of incidents I have been describing is threatening the fabric of the city.”

Mr.Blair’s comments underline the growing concern at the Yard at the way in
which
guns are increasingly available on the streets and being used to carry out
crimes.
