Gunshot victim was actually attempting robbery

FAYETTEVILLE, July 26 ? Sheriff Earl Butler of Cumberland County announced today that a young man who was originally thought to be the victim of a drive-by shooting was in fact a suspect in a kidnapping and robbery case that ended in gunfire.

The suspects in this case, 16-year-old Kevin Johnson and 17-year-old Demetrice Copening, stopped Alfonso Ferguson and two other men in a car and asked for a ride. Police say while Ferguson was driving, the suspects produced guns and demanded the car. An altercation followed and Johnson was shot.
The car left the road and several of the occupants fled the vehicle and subsequently the area. A witness notified 911 and both the Fayetteville Police Department and emergency crews responded.
Johnson is currently at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in stable condition. The case is still under investigation and arrests are pending.
Fayetteville Police determined that the case was under county juridstiction and turned it over to Sheriff Earl Butler?s office. Through valuable information provided by witnesses, Butler?s investigator?s were able to determine Johnson?s actual role in the altercation.
