Violence at home often follows women to work. The problem is more widespread than you may think: One in four women in the United States is physically abused by a husband or lover in her lifetime. In a case of emergency, most women do not think of turning to their employer first. But an increasing number of women are now finding shelter in the workplace.
When Tonja White’s ex-boyfriend told her he bought a .38 with her name on it and warned her that she better look over her shoulder, her employer at the time–Blue Shield of California–obtained a business court order of protection to prevent him from coming near her at work.
