Handgun Self defense is no joke

March 1st, 2012

“If my opponent were correct to claim that defense with a
firearm is not ‘instinctual’, and therefore not practical,
then it would be obvious that we could never learn to
perform ANY complex mental/physical task. Think about it!
Driving a car is a totally unnatural experience, yet almost
anyone, including many handicapped people, can learn to do
it if they decide to do so. Cooking a complex meal or
writing an essay is unnatural, yet almost anyone can learn
to do it. Working for money is unnatural and abstract, yet
most people learn to do it. Using a computer has no basis
in instinct, and is extremely complex and abstract, yet most
people can learn to do that. Most sports involve totally
unnatural decisions, actions, and reactions, yet we not only
learn to do it, we actually do it for the pure enjoyment of
it, often in total contravention of our survival instincts.
So when someone tells you that defense with a firearm is
“unnatural” or “not instinctual”, be aware that they are
really saying that they just hate firearms and they hate the
idea that defense with a firearm is actually possible. If
it were so “impossible”, we wouldn’t find 2.5 million people
per year successfully defending themselves, their loved
ones, or their property. Human instinct has always included
a ‘flight or fight’ physiological reaction, but it is up to
you to decide how effective you want your reaction to be, if
you are placed in a position where ‘fight’ is the necessary
response. Learn the most effective responses in advance, or
try to figure them out during the middle of a crisis. Which
method do you think will work better?”
