Shots fired in liquor store robbery, deputy arrests teen

MOUNT VERNON (AP) — A 15-year-old boy was arrested Saturday after a
liquor store robbery in which gunshots were exchanged.

A deputy sheriff who heard the gunshots as he was driving by, chased a
red pickup that sped away from the scene, stopping it two miles away
and
taking the boy into custody. He was turned over to juvenile
authorities.

According to a statement from Lawrence County Sheriff Doug Seneker,
Deputy Walt Metevier heard the shots as he drove past the K Highway
Liquor Store west of Marionville about 10:46 a.m. He said that after
stopping the truck, Metevier found a loaded .22 caliber, semi-
automatic
pistol, a black bag containing money and two bottles of liquor.

Seneker said the suspect entered the store with a pistol, demanding
money and liquor, and reportedly fired two shots through the window as
he fled, one narrowly missing store owner Dearl Lane of Aurora.

Glass from the shattered window cut Lane slightly, authorities said.
One
bullet they recovered passed through a store display and lodged in a
bag
of cookies.

Lane, who was standing behind the cash register, returned fire with a
shotgun as the pickup sped off, one shot blowing out the back window
of
the truck.

Seneker said the store owner acted appropriately in returning the
gunfire.

”He was within his rights,” the sheriff said. ”He was protecting
himself and his property.”

The sheriff said that if Lane had been standing a few inches from
where
he was, a bullet would have hit him in the chest.

Seneker said the boy’s parents are truckers who were making a run to
California, and they were on their way back Saturday afternoon after a
relative told them of their son’s arrest.
