Boy charged as adult in zoo shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) — A 16-year-old boy accused of shooting seven children at
the National Zoo was charged Wednesday as an adult.

Antoine Bernard Jones, who police said is the son of a convicted drug
figure, is charged with assault with intent to commit murder while armed in
the shooting of an 11-year-old boy.

The boy, who remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the
head,
was injured when Jones allegedly fired on a group of people outside the zoo
Monday, police said.

Police have said the shooting stemmed from a quarrel between two groups of
youths. Six other children between 12 and 16 years old also were hurt, but
they were all treated and released from hospitals.

Jones, who was arrested Tuesday, will probably face other charges, police
said.

At his arraignment Wednesday, Jones was ordered held without bond pending a
May 12 preliminary hearing. If convicted, Jones faces a maximum sentence of
life in prison.

“This 16-year-old acted alone out of anger,” said Terrance W. Gainer, the
Metropolitan Police Department’s executive assistant police chief.

Jones’ attorney, Renee Raymond, refused to comment.

Police said Jones is the son of James Antonio Jones, 44, who once was an
enforcer for the Rayful Edmond drug ring.

Officials said it used to be the largest drug enterprise in the city,
bringing as much as 1,700 pounds of cocaine into Washington every month.

The elder Jones was sentenced to 29 years in prison after a 1990
drug-conspiracy conviction.
Gainer said police know where the 9 mm handgun they believe was used in the
shootings was thrown, but the weapon has not been recovered.
