At 5 feet 5 inches tall and 14 years old, Albert Shadis Jr. was the same age
as classmate Christopher Michael Bess but 3 inches shorter.

Hampton police say Bess picked on the smaller boy, known as “A.J.,” until he
finally challenged Bess to a fight Saturday evening.

The fight turned fatal. Bess, a freshman like A.J. at Henry County High
School, is in a youth detention facility in Clayton County, charged with
murder for allegedly stabbing A.J. to death with a steak knife.

Henry County District Attorney Tommy Floyd said Bess will be tried in
Superior Court as an adult. He had no previous arrests, police said.

According to police Sgt. Choya Barber, A.J. confronted Bess at a friend’s
house on Old Hampton Way and urged him “if you want to fight, come out now.”

By the account of eyewitnesses, Bess allegedly got a 6-inch knife from the
kitchen and followed A.J. as he walked away, ignoring friends’ cries to put
the knife down. As A.J. turned around, the assailant lunged with the knife
and stabbing him “right over the heart,” Barber said.

A.J.’s 10-year-old brother witnessed the stabbing, he added.

A.J. collapsed. Bess put the knife in the kitchen sink and called 911.

Barber said, “He gave the address and said, ‘Someone’s been stabbed.’ The
operator asked who did it, and he said, ‘I did.’ ”

Barber said he was among the first officers at the scene and found Bess
“standing there, standing over the body with an ‘I messed up’ look on his
face.”

A.J. was rushed to Henry Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly
after 7 p.m.

In a Superior Court appearance Monday, Judge Hal Craig informed Bess of the
murder charge. A bond hearing will be set within the next two weeks.

A.J.’s funeral was Tuesday in McDonough.

Barber said the stabbing may have stemmed from an argument late last week,
but he did not know what it was about. He said acquaintances told police
that “Christopher had been bullying and picking on A.J. for some period of
time, though at other times they were friendly.”

“I couldn’t give you any details,” he added.
