Dear Nancy:
Thank you for writing and sharing your concerns about gun
control. I am
aware of several pieces of legislation in this area that will be considered;
however,
none has come before a committee yet. As you know, this has been a very
heated
issue since the 1999 session, and will be again. Representative Dave Jones
is
sponsoring a bill to ban all weapons in churches and schools, and there are
also
concerns that weapons be kept from those who have been convicted of a
violent
misdemeanor and those with mental illness. I haven’t had an opportunity to
look at any of these yet in detail, but I believe each is being drafted from
the standpoint of
safety issues rather than a desire to restrict gun owners. I realize that
there are those in our society who would ban guns entirely, but I do not
understand that to be the intention of these legislators. They simply want
citizens to feel safe while allowing concealed weapons carriers as much
freedom as possible. There are
those who never want to carry guns, and they do not feel comfortable with
others being able to take their guns everywhere without restrictions. Many
parents worry about guns around their children, in school or otherwise.
Their rights to feel safe and
not have to worry about a gun accident within their children’s school is
just
as
important to consider as those of gun owners. Please feel free to contact
me
again with your concerns. Sincerely, Rep. Karen Morgan
