AIRGUN CONTROL LAWS COULD BE INTRODUCED
BY PAUL KANE
10:30 – 07 November 2002
Prime Minister Tony Blair has signalled the Government could be set to
introduce new laws to control the use of airguns.
Legislation may be included in next week’s Queen Speech as part of a
crackdown on anti-social behaviour.
It follows a national campaign for stringent gun controls by MPs and families
of youngsters killed or injured by the weapons.
The Leicester Mercury, along with the RSPCA, mounted a campaign in support.
Mr Blair’s comments, made in the House of Commons, came after Labour MP Dari
Taylor asked how the Government intended to control the use of the
potentially lethal weapons.
The Prime Minister said: “This is an issue, along with those other issues to
do with anti-social behaviour, that is right at the top of people’s agenda
and the worries of MPs.
“That is why we are looking at the whole issue of the licensing of airguns
and we will have something to announce on that in the next period of time.”
As reported in Wednesday’s Mercury, a gang of up to six men punched and
kicked a terrified 14-year-old boy, in the Highfields area of Leicester, on
Monday afternoon.
The boy was with his cousin when he was attacked by the men – thought to be
aged between 17 and 21. The teenager, who has asked not to be named, was also
shot in the leg with an airgun during the incident in Spinney Hill Park.
His mum said: “It is definitely good news that the Government is looking to
bring in some control or licensing of airguns.
“It is something which needs to be done for everyone’s sake. I’m pleased to
hear what the Prime Minister has said and it is good to hear they are moving
in the right direction.
“I think some sort of licensing would make it easier for the police to deal
with these type of incidents in the future.”
Last year, the Mercury revealed how easy it was to buy deadly weapons on the
high street.
We bought an air rifle, a high velocity catapult which fires ball-bearings,
telescopic nunchakus and a 3ft sword in one morning for less than ?200. No
shops asked about intended use.
The Mercury is supporting the RSPCA’s campaign for all airgun owners to be
licensed with a certificate saying why they own a gun and their competency in
using it.
