Two men were stoned to death by members of the Winnie Mandela informal settlement in Tembisa on the East Rand after they robbed a spaza shop at gunpoint on Friday morning, Johannesburg police said.

Captain Sophie Mayisela said the men arrived at the shop around 7.30am and asked to buy a packet of cigarettes. When the cashier gave it to them, one of the men pointed a firearm at her. The pair fled after taking an undisclosed amount of money.
