Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say that an AM/PM mini mart clerk did
everything that he was ordered to do during a robbery Sunday morning, but he
was killed anyway.
Jarnail Singh, an Indian immigrant who worked the graveyard shift at the
AM/PM market on El Segundo Blvd. in Gardena, was discovered on the floor of
the store around 2 a.m. Sunday. He was bleeding to death from a gunshot to
the chest.
Efforts to save him failed, and Singh was pronounced dead at the scene by
paramedics.
Deputy sheriff Cruz Solis told CBS 2 News that the shooting looked totally
unprovoked because videotape from surveillance cameras in the store showed
the victim complying with the robbers’ demands.
“It can only be described as an act of cowardice [by the perpetrators],”
Solis said. “The suspects shot him and fled the scene. The gunman apparently
had a waiting vehicle.”
As yet, no eyewitnesses to the fatal shooting have come forward. But
sheriff’s investigators are hoping that the surveillance tape will help them
catch Singh’s killers.
“The tape was rolling at the time of the incident,” Solis told CBS 2 News.
“However, it is going through some enhancements and, hopefully, detectives
will soon have a clearer picture of who these suspects are.”
The owner of the mini mart was devastated by news of his clerk’s murder and
was said to be debating about whether to reopen the AM/PM. It’s the second
robbery at the store in less than a year, the owner told CBS 2 News.
Singh was a newcomer to the country and was trying to accumulate enough
money to bring his wife and three children from India, according to
investigators.
