Some findings from the “State of Home Safety Report in America” being
released Thursday
by the Home Safety Council:
–The leading cause of fatalities and injuries resulting from home injuries
was falls, with 6,750
deaths and 5.6 million injuries. Next for fatalities was poisonings with
5,750 deaths, and for injuries it was being cut, pierced or stabbed by a
sharp object — totaling 1.7 million.
–People older than 64 were the most frequent victims of falls.
–The highest rates of poisoning deaths were among males 25-to-64.
–Older adults had the highest rates of unintentional home injury death
among all age groups, with persons older than 75 experiencing injury deaths
at rates three to 10 times
higher than people of younger age groups.
–The most costly injury in the home was fires or burns, costing an average
of $155,000 per
incident.
–One-third of all households with stairs do not have banisters or handrails
on at least one set
of stairs.
