Armed robber whacked with Christmas paper

A storekeeper armed with a roll of Christmas wrapping paper took on a
thief with a gun and won.

The robber, armed with a black 9mm handgun, entered the grocery store
near 132nd Street and 80th Avenue in Surrey on Saturday and demanded
the 28-year-old clerk hand over the cash.

“The clerk, having been robbed before, started yelling for help from
her family while trying to give the suspect what he wanted,” an RCMP
officer said.

The storeowner heard his daughter’s cries for help and ran
downstairs, grabbing the first thing he could find — the thick roll
of Christmas wrapping paper.

The gunman had by now snatched a roll of change and was heading for
the door.

But dad caught up with him and swung the roll of paper across his
face.

“The impact caused the suspect to drop the money and at the same
time, the magazine fell out of his gun,” the officer said.

The startled thief fled in a dark-coloured, possibly burgundy, older
model Dodge Caravan.

He may have suffered a bloody lip.
