Strolling assailant slashes 3 on Shibuya street

A paper cutter-wielding man calmly attacked five women, slashing three of them, as he walked through Tokyo’s busy Shibuya-ku, police said Sunday.

The unnamed attacker, who identified himself as a self-employed man from Kawasaki, reportedly offered an incoherent statement to officers after his arrest.

“They (the victims) did me wrong five years ago, so I was retaliating. But I never intended to stab them,” the man was quoted by police as saying.

An eyewitness said the assailant walked up Dogenzaka street and — without saying a word — slashed a woman chatting with her friend at around 9 p.m. Saturday. The 23-year-old woman suffered a minor cut in the attack and was sent to hospital.

Still meandering along the street and not speaking, the assailant then targeted four more women with the cutter. Two were slightly injured and also received hospital treatment.

Law enforcement officers overpowered him as he walked past a police box.
