Iowa Legislative Update — January 18, 2000

Another legislative session started earlier this month and that
means you need to protect your gun rights and start making those
contacts to the Capitol to make sure your legislators do too.

At the forefront, there’s Senate File 250, still kicking around from
last March, which would dangerously expand federal law enforcement
powers in Iowa. The Feds could come in and arrest Iowa citizens for
LOCAL violations that are not even indictable offenses.

The Feds would not need any local law enforcement to accompany them
either. The Sheriff doesn’t even have to be told! Some Federal
“Cop” would be allowed to waltz in and bust you for almost anything.

These already unconstitutional “federal policemen” would have
virtually the same powers as the Sheriff YOU elect and the law
enforcement officers YOU hire, but they will never have to answer to
you!

Let your Senators know that you don’t want an unaccountable stranger
coming in and running Iowa like some hired gun.

In the House, there is some good protection for gun owners and
manufacturers proposed. House File 595 would prohibit frivolous
lawsuits against gun manufacturers, and also prohibit localities
from regulating firearms.

The lawsuit prohibition would allow the Attorney General to sue if a
majority of both houses grant permission. No city or county would
be allowed to sue gun manufacturers. Such lawsuits are in the news
– and to date they are being thrown out of court, recognized as the
frivolous and baseless actions they are.

The local preemption part of House File 595 protects Iowa citizens
from a patchwork of differing gun regulations from town to town or
county to county, etc. Most often, without such preemption,
sportsmen and hunters get snagged in a confusing web of local
ordinances that cost them legal fees and fines without ever really
committing a crime.

Contact your Representatives and tell them to get House File 595 to
the floor for a vote this session. Tell them that this important
protection for gun owners cannot languish in Committee.
