Kalashnikov Celebrates 80th Birthday
On November 11, 1999, approximately 1,000 VIPs and other invited guests gathered in the Opera House in the city of Izhevsk, Russia, to honor Dr. Mikhail T. Kalashnikov, designer of the AK-47 and AK-74 rifles on the occassion of his 80th birthday. In Russia, Dr. Kalishnikov is a well-known patriot and highly decorated hero. Confirminng Dr. Kalishnikov’s honored status, among the many VIPs present were the prime minister of Russia, defense minister, head of the Duma, mayor of Moscow and the president of Udmurt Republic which hosted the event. following a short speech from the prime minister and presentation of several official gifts, the defense minister promoted Dr. Kalashnikov to lieutenant general (two stars). Next, in an unprecendented move, NRA Secretary Jim Land was invited to the podium to offer best wishes to Dr. Kalishikov who is an NRA life member. Land noted that NRA members share a love of shooting and hunting with their Russian colleagues. In a short closing speech, Dr. Kalishnikov forcefully reiterated his firm support for the right to keep and bear arms by private citizens all over the world. Those present responded with a standing ovation. Now retired, Dr. Kalishnikov remains an avid hunter, shooter and outdoorsman.
