Police set next month as voluntary reporting period for firearm owners

To ensure a safe 2002 World Cup, the National Police Agency (NPA) will
introduce a one-month voluntary reporting period for owners of unregistered
weapons, officials said yesterday.
Owners of illegal weapons can report them to police stations during
February, either directly, through third parties, or by mail.

Police said civilians who make reports during the designated period will be
exempt from punishment.

Under the current law, owners of illegal weapons face prison terms of up to
10 years or a maximum fine of 20 million won.

Targeted weapons include firearms such as handguns, rifles, machine guns and
air guns; as well as explosives, tear gas bombs, mines and other weapons
like daggers and cattle prods.

Efforts by police to increase public safety will also include cracking down
on manufacturers and dealers of lethal firearms and explosives, officials
said. They will also make regular security checks of public buildings and
facilities used for the World Cup finals.

Meanwhile, the NPA on Tuesday deployed 24-hour police units to the 10 World
Cup venues across the country.

Police forces were also deployed at 11 seaports and airports to enhance
security checks on people entering the country.
