Canadian news broadcasters (most notably the CBC) have chosen to
give the parents of Dawson College victim Anastasia De Sousa the
opportunity to speak on something they know nothing about in order to
misinform the public.
In a CBC interview, Louise De Sousa refers to Kimveer Gill’s firearm as
a “machine gun” and that we shouldn’t have them.
For one thing, a semi-automatic is not a machine gun and for another,
machine guns have been illegal since 1979 (except for a very few
grandfathered collectors).
Nelson De Sousa similarly calls the semi-automatic an “automatic” and
says that it’s illegal for hunting.
There are many makes and models of hunting rifles that are
semi-automatic – all legal and all more powerful than the one used by
their daughter’s killer.
But if her killer had instead used the pump-action shotgun he was also
carrying, many more students could have been killed.
Previous attempts at prohibiting various models of firearms have
resulted in a confusing mishmash of regulations that have served only to
lower the value of collectors’ property and done nothing to keep
criminals and aberrant individuals from committing atrocious crimes.
Uninformed people should not be given a platform to mislead the public
on firearms policy – that’s how we ended up with a useless
billion-plus-dollar registry.
Unless of course the CBC and other news outlets want it that way.
