If it saves one life, arms in the woods

Your reporting of the Waterloo, Ont. man and his dog’s encounter with a
bear (“Camper uses hunting knife to kill attacking black bear near Wawa”
- story July 24) reminds me of the mantra that the anti-gun crowd often
uses to justify the Firearms Act and all the billions of dollars of
waste attached to it. Not a single life has been spared by the
implementation of this draconian legislation. As a matter of fact, six
fine RCMP officers are the dead proof that the Firearms Act is a deadly
sham.

Applying the Coalition for Gun Control’s battle cry of “If it saves just
one life, it is worth it” to this situation, then if it saves just one
life then all people traveling the woods, post-spring bear hunt
cancellation, should have the right to carry a suitable handgun for
protection.

People, no matter where they are, have the right to self-defense and
they should not be denied the tools to enforce that right – especially
in the wilderness.
