Subject: Liz Michael leading GOP fundraising in 43rd Assembly District.
- Michael calls opponents “unelectable”.

As reported by the Los Angeles Daily News on Friday January 28, 2000, Liz Michael leads all GOP 43rd District candidates in active fundrasing since the beginning of the year, with Michael having raised $11,342, compared to Mark MacCarley’s $9,889, and Craig Missakian’s $1,970.

“My opponents are unelectable for a number of reasons”, says Michael. “First of all, they have failed to raise the necessary funds from within their district, having to rely on personal loans to their own campaign. Even though they have loaned their campaigns more than I’ve loaned mine, this demonstrates an inability to get community support for their campaigns. Moreover, they have not demonstrated the ability to get money from outside the district, as I clearly have. Meaning that in order to win the primary, they have to throw their personal wealth behind their election. Neither of the previous GOP nominees were able to turn personal wealth into campaign success in November.

“Additionally, even most of my loans are from other sources,” says Michael.

Another reason Michael provides for the unelectability of her GOP opponents are that they both support Proposition 22. Additionally, Craig Missakian has come out against gay rights.

“This district includes a large number of gay and gay sympathetic people,” she says. “A candidate who supports Proposition 22 and opposes gay rights simply cannot be elected in this district. The citizens of this district will just not tolerate candidates who support making gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual people second class citizens.”

Michael is openly inviting gay and lesbian Democrats and Democrats who care about gay rights to cross over and vote for her in the primary. “My Democratic opponents are all equally good on these issues. By voting for Liz Michael, district voters send a badly needed message to the GOP that we will not tolerate intolerance in our elected representatives. A vote for me eliminates the spectacle of actually having an anti-gay candidate appear on ballots in, and actually campaigning in, gay enclaves in November. It settles this issue in this district once and for all.”

The fight over Proposition 22 accentuates a division in the GOP on the issue. Recently, Ward Connerly, conservative UC regent, and the author of Proposition 209, came out against Proposition 22. All the mayoral candidates in San Diego have come out against Proposition 22.
