Man pleads guilty in stabbing death of wife

Newnan — Reynard Thomas has pleaded guilty to malice murder in the stabbing death of his wife. His plea was in exchange for the prosecution dropping charges of murder and aggravated assault.

He was sentenced to life in prison by Judge Ben J. Miller following the plea agreement Wednesday.

Thomas’ wife, Veronica Coleman Thomas, was reported missing in March 1998 in DeKalb County. Her remains were found near Moreland in Coweta County in April 2000.

As the third witness was called to testify Wednesday, Thomas’ attorneys met with the judge. Moments later, Thomas pleaded guilty to the malice murder charge. Thomas was already serving a 12-year sentence for the aggravated assault of a girlfriend that occurred after his wife was reported missing.

Thomas had previous involvements with women who disappeared under mysterious circumstances, prosecutors said.

His first wife, Nyla Washington, disappeared in 1980 after the pair had marital problems, said prosecutor Rudjard Hayes. She has never been found.

His next wife, Maguarite Guice Thomas, left him with their 2-month-old child. He stalked her and shot at her, and was convicted of simple battery in 1991. In 1992, he was convicted of aggravated assault, authorities said.

In 1993, when he was out of prison, he met Jocherie Williams, began dating her and a short while later she was found dead, possibly of suffocation, Hayes said. Thomas was never charged.
