Maine Legislative Alert — January 26, 2000
The Maine legislature has begun its second scheduled session, and of
the thousands of bills in the hopper, only certain ones are marked
for any type of action. Rest assured, the anti-gun bills are going
to be moving.
Contact your legislators right away and insist they stop these
anti-gun measures from becoming law in Maine.
There are four bills that are earmarked for activity in the very
near future:
LD 1858 — A carry-over from last session (both Houses must agree to
carry over, so this bill will see action). Labeled “Possession by
Felons,” LD 1858 is in reality a MISDEMEANOR GUN BAN. The bill
takes gun rights away for “domestic violence.” Such “violence” can
include a shouting match with a spouse, or spanking of an out of
control child. And there are other, serious, ramifications. Think
about it:
* Anti-gun legislators will keep expanding the list of offenses
for which they can take away your gun rights. (Spitting on the
sidewalk? Speeding? Parking tickets?) Sounds ridiculous, but
that’s the kind of power this precedent will give the anti-gunners.
Don’t believe for a second that ANY misdemeanor won’t eventually
become a target for these people. The real agenda is to take away
your gun rights.
* If these misdeameanor “crimes” are so awful that your gun
rights are lost — THEN SHOULDN’T YOU LOSE ALL THE OTHER RIGHTS
ASSOCIATED WITH A FELONY? If a crime is so serious that it
justifies the loss of THIS constitutional right, it is serious
enough that other rights and privileges, including the right to
vote, to serve on a jury, and the “privilege” of holding any
professional license (Law, Medicine), teaching certificate, elected
office, etc. should also be revoked.
* Gun owners are treated as second class citizens. The fact of
the matter is that these often victimless “crimes” are being used as
a very powerful tool to disarm you — and it is working. The
liberal anti-gunners want gun owners singled out as somehow more
violent and less deserving of rights than other citizens.
* “Hey! She shoved her husband, take away her driver’s license!”
Again, this sounds like a ridiculous statement. But change
“driver’s license” to “gun rights,” and you have the legislation we
are talking about here. You see, this bill is NOT about safety, it
is NOT about crime prevention, and it is definitely NOT the “common
sense” approach the liberal anti-gun crowd and the media would like
you to believe. It is about taking away the Rights and the Dignity
of gun owners.
LD 2405 — A “companion” bill for LD 1858, this fast-moving
legislation provides almost $500,000 in taxpayer monies for 9 new
prosecutors who will deal ONLY WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASES. Now
that is convenient — make a major crime out of a minor crime, then
create a whole new section of bureaucracy to deal with it!
LD 2484 — Prohibits carry permits for people who have had a
protective order against them in the past two years — whether it
was removed or not. In the recent Emerson decision, the Texas
Circuit Court ruled that a prohibition based on such an order is
unconstitutional. Not to mention, a vengeful ex-spouse or companion
(as the definition in the law reads) can, through mere accusation,
get your right to a gun revoked by saying you threatened them in
some way, and getting a protective order against you. In many
cases, this can easily be done in your absence!
LD 2494 — Creates a “Commission” to study firearms. This bill is
just another way to not only attack your gun rights, but use your
money to do it. Government appointed bureaucrats will roam around
the state on your dime. They will host feel-good meetings staffed
by state-paid employees and “take recommendations” from like-minded
liberals. All to in order to justify a report that is probably
already written saying guns, not people are the cause of violence.
We know that this is one of the biggest (and unfortunately, most
effective) lies the anti-gunners use and they are not about to let
fact or real public opinion get in the way of their agenda.
Please DO NOT HESITATE. All these bills are set to move soon, maybe
in the next several days. Use the following contact information and
contact your legislators immediately!
Please write in “Representative” or “Senator,” and then the name of
you r legislator in the space provided. Use the prewritten message,
or write your own, but please, email or call right away. (Rosters

Dear __________________________________
As a concerned and law-abiding gun owner in Maine, I urge you to
protect my rights by voting against any and all Gun Control in this
legislative session. I am aware of 4 bills that are of concern to
gun owners across the state.
LD 1858, the carryover bill, will institute a ban on firearms
ownership for misdemeanors, and represents a danger to all
constitutional rights. LD 2405 and LD 2494 both merely expand the
bureaucracy and spend my tax dollars, while threatening my
constitutional rights and doing nothing to curb crime. LD 2484 has
been ruled unconstitutional already by the courts under another
name. These bills are GUN CONTROL and Maine citizens don’t want
them.
Again, I urge you to stand up for the Rights enumerated in the
Constitution, and oppose any and all Gun Control legislation.
Sincerely,________________________________
