New statistics show that while handguns are most often used in violent
crimes in Toronto, more unorthodox weapons are also popular.
According to Toronto gun crime statistics obtained by the Toronto Star,
more than a quarter of the recovered guns in 2006 are not normally
considered lethal weapons.
Many criminals are apparently arming themselves with starter’s pistols,
toy guns, paintball guns, cap guns and flare guns.
Statistics also show more than half of the 2,432 guns seized by Toronto
police up to Dec. 18 were considered “non-criminal.”
That means police got the guns through a variety of means, such as a
family member turning in an antique rifle after its owner dies or
through a gun amnesty.
Gun crime continues to be a problem in Toronto with 28 people killed
with a weapon in 2006, a far cry from the record 52 slain in 2005.
Toronto police also say the using a replica or air pistol is dangerous
for both police and for the criminal.
