A Tylertown man is dead after his father allegedly shot him following an
argument Tuesday night, Walthall County sheriff’s officials said.

John Samuel Rushing, 24, died of a gunshot wound to the chest after his
father, Sammy Rushing, allegedly shot him with a .38-caliber revolver,
Walthall sheriff’s investigator Tony Rushing.

John Rushing reportedly tried to attack his father with an axe around
9:30 that night at their house, located at 521 Airline Highway, the
investigator said this morning.

No charges have been filed in the shooting death, but Tony Rushing said
an investigation into the case is continuing.

Officials have not reported what the father and son were arguing over
before the shooting.

Officials also said they do not know if alcohol or drugs were involved
in the shooting death.

“The father’s real upset,” Walthall County Coroner Shannon Hartzog said.

After the shooting, officials took John Rushing to Walthall County
General Hospital, where Hartzog pronounced him dead at 10:15 p.m.

An autopsy has been conducted by the state medical examiner’s office.
However, officials are waiting on results of a toxicology report that
would determine if drugs or alcohol were present in Rushing’s body at
the time of the accident.
