Skunk proves to be 1st rabies case of year
CALDWELL COUNTY
LENOIR — Caldwell County reported its first rabies case of the year
Thursday after the state public health lab confirmed that a skunk a man
shot Tuesday was rabid. The skunk wandered into a dog lot owned by James
Moore, who lives on Selkirk Drive in southern Caldwell, and came into
contact with two dogs. A neighbor shot the skunk and called the county
Animal Control office, which sent the animal to the lab Wednesday.One
dog was up to date on its rabies vaccinations, but the other wasn’t and
had to be euthanized, officials said. — GREG LACOUR
