NRA shoots down stricter gun rules
A gun control package backed by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley crashed
to the earth Thursday – faster than a mallard pumped full of
birdshot. The National Rifle Association took aim at a bevy of
proposed gun restrictions and shot them down one at a time. The
Senate Judiciary Committee rejected:
Increasing the price of a Firearm Owners Identification Card from $5
to $25 and requiring card applicants to be fingerprinted and
photographed.
Imposing criminal background checks for purchases at gun shows.
Allowing a person to purchase no more than one handgun per month.
The fate of a measure that would restrict the use of certain
“military style” rifles remains uncertain. Although the bill passed
committee, the sponsor, Sen. Antonio Munoz, D-Chicago, promised
committee members not to call the measure for a full Senate vote
until he met with a representative of the NRA and made changes sought
by Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale. But the NRA wasn’t talking about
compromise Friday. It was talking victory.
