The hero owner of a Brooklyn pet store wrestled a gun away from two robbers and shot both men dead last night, police said.
The street justice was delivered after the thugs entered JG’s Quality Canines at 2434 Stillwell Ave. in Gravesend about 8:10 p.m. and announced a stickup, cops said.
One robber pistol-whipped a store employee, cops said. The owner then grappled with one of the bandits and managed to get his gun, police said.
The owner, a man in his 40s, fired several rounds and fatally struck both men in the chest, police said.
“Finally, a shop owner gets justice and gets to go home to his family and the bad guys lose,” said Billy Beichert, 22, who lives in the neighborhood. “It’s about time.”
Cops recovered two handguns, a .38-caliber and a 9-mm., at the scene, police said.
Rich Solis, 30, was on his way home when he saw the storeowner, identified by neighbors only as Ivan, run out of his shop and approach cops.
“He said, ‘Oh my God! I think I killed two people,’ ” Solis said. “He said, ‘Go inside.’ He was very nervous. He was saying, ‘I got the gun and I shot them.’ “
Solis said the owner, who had bloodstains on his hands, appeared distraught and kept putting his hands to his face as he spoke frantically to the officers.
Beichert said he heard three rapid gunshots coming from the direction of the pet shop.
“This surprises me because it’s a very safe place. You have to be buzzed in,” Beichert said of the store.
A store worker was injured in the hand during the incident and taken to Coney Island Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition last night, police said.
It was not immediately clear how the employee was hurt, cops said.
Police said the store has been robbed several times in the past.
Neighbors said Ivan has run the shop for more than 20 years and takes excellent care of his pedigreed pups.
A sign outside the store lists poodles, Yorkies, dobermans, schnauzers, Shih Tzus and Lhasa apsos as the breeds for sale.
“He always says, ‘Come see the dogs,’ ” said Jose Sosa, 19, who works at a nearby grocery store where Ivan is a regular customer. “He’s really proud of them. He cares a lot.”
The storeowner was being questioned at the 60th Precinct stationhouse last night, police said. “This is a robbery gone awry,” a police source said.
