SELF-DEFENSE SHOOTER CAN GUN BUT HE CAN’T HIDE
By DOUGLAS MONTERO
January 23, 2002

WITH a wounded, two-bit hood writhing at his feet and a loaded gun in
his hand, Hong Dong Xie thought – for a split second – about one thing:
murder.

It was a fleeting thought born of the anger that comes from a series of
muggings and robberies that have plagued his Wing Shing Chinese Kitchen
on Second Avenue for the past four years.

“I could’ve just shot him,” Xie said yesterday, describing how the
alleged crook Adrian Santiago, 16, collapsed to the floor after being
shot in the hip.

“But, I didn’t want to kill him – I don’t want to kill anyone – I was
just defending myself,” said Xie, who co-owns the small takeout
restaurant with his 55-year-old mother.

Yesterday, Xie was once again a sitting duck inside the East Harlem
restaurant – but not by choice.

Xie, who was arrested after the shooting for taking his legal handgun
outside his place of business, returned to work Saturday shortly after
his release. He returned to protect his family and the immigrant dream
he’s pursued for the past 12 years since he came to the U.S. from China.

That’s why Xie, 28, didn’t give in to two punks who allegedly accosted
him in the hallway just as he was walking out of an East 108th Street
apartment building where he had delivered food to a regular customer.

Xie claims one of the knife-brandishing muggers yelled “CHINO! Give me
the money or I’ll kill you!” as the other pulled him by the collar of
his jacket.

The thieves then began rifling through his pockets, Xie said – and
quickly learned he had a .380-caliber semiautomatic tucked inside the
right side of his pants.

“They were trying to take the gun away from me and during the struggle,
the gun went off,” Xie said. “I had to protect myself.”

Santiago fell to the floor, and his accomplice fled.

Xie said he paused for a few seconds – a combination of anger and
nervousness consuming his body. Other thugs had tried in the past to rob
him, but he was able to run
away.

But Xie did the right thing. He crossed the street, called cops and told
them, “I shot someone.”

Xie knows Santiago was charged with attempted robbery and will likely be
back on the streets once he’s released from the hospital. Santiago’s
accomplice is still on the lam.

“If it were up to me, I could run away. But I can’t, I can’t hide,” said
Xie, who also has to support a wife and 2-year old daughter. “I don’t
want to hide because, considering what he did, I have nothing to be
ashamed of.”
