Subject: on guns, airline safety, etc.
Dear Teachers:
My background includes being a member of the United Coke, Coal, and Chemical Workers, Amalgamated (now merged upwards) and as as pilot in the USAF. I’m also the parent of 5 children and going on 15 grandchildren. And, I’ve guest lectured in various schools, mostly at University level.
I wish to strongly recommend that NEA support the following:
1 – guns in cockpits of commercial airliners, that is pilots being allowed to carry firearms. Yes, trained, etc. but let me tell you AS A PILOT that this is the smart move. I’ve heard all the arguments pro and con. Do it.
2 – school principals, administrators, and teachers should be allowed conceal to carry of firearms on school property. This includes their having proper training and that it be on a voluntary basis. Again, I’ve seen all the arguments. Do it.
3 – Inherent in the above is NEA’s full support of properly interpreted 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution, namely that individuals have the right to bear arms. Not only have I heard the arguments, I’ve read the writings of our founding fathers to a wide extent.
4 – When I was in school there was a rifle club and training in the proper respect and use of firearms. With our nation under attack, it would be an especially sound time for the NEA to back a return of such elective classes.
I would like to have your clear and affirmative reply to this e-letter.
Thank you.
Sincerely, Bob Heltman, NC
