Police officer shoots himself in the leg

A Victoria police officer was taken to hospital for a self-inflected leg wound Friday
after a handgun went off unintentionally.
The incident happened in Colwood around noon after the unidentified officer stopped
off at his or her Fulton Road home, West Shore RCMP said.
The officer had just returned from shooting practice at a rod-and-gun club range
on the Malahat, Cpl. Gerry Sutherland said.
The officer was getting out of a privately-owned car when the gun, a nine-millimetre
pistol, accidentally discharged, Sutherland said. He did not know whether the gun
was in a holster.
Accidental discharges of firearms are not uncommon, “but actually hitting yourself
is kind of rare,” he said.
RCMP withheld the identity of the officer and are continuing to investigate the
case, though “No charges are contemplated,” Sutherland said.
Injuries to the officer were not life-threatening but “there was some surgery
required,” said acting Insp. Les Sylvan, of Victoria police.
Sylvan said he couldn’t comment further until Monday when further details of the
case are expected to be released.
