BEAVERTON – A retired sheriff’s detective shot at a burglar in his
Beaverton home early Thursday morning after hearing noises and
confronting the intruder, police said. It was the third time a Northwest
homeowner has fired at an alleged intruder in the last three weeks.

Authorities investigating the burglary-turned-shooting said it was
unknown whether a bullet actually hit the suspect, who fled on foot.

The homeowner told officers that he heard noises inside of a storage
room attached to his house and that when he looked outside, he saw one
male suspect coming out of the storage room, carrying an unknown item.

Soon the suspect returned to the storage room, according to the
homeowner, who said he walked outside and confronted the burglar.

“The suspect failed to follow the homeowners’ verbal instructions not to
move and made a movement that caused the homeowner to discharge his
handgun in the direction of the suspect,” said officer Paul Wandell with
the Beaverton Police Department.

The suspect was described as standing about 5-foot-11, having a medium
build and wearing a yellow, hooded jacket that had dark-colored
shoulders. His race and age were unknown.
The incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. in the 17800 block of SW Walker
Rd.

On Sunday, a homeowner in Albany confronted three people who police said
had stolen items from his house. A fight ensued and the homeowner fired
two shots from a handgun.
One of the shots hit a 17-year-old male suspect who was briefly
hospitalized, and then treated and released.

The 17-year-old suspect was charged with robbery in the first degree,
burglary in the first degree, assault in the second degree and being a
minor in possession of alcohol. A 16-year-old male suspect was charged
with curfew violation.

In another recent incident, an alleged burglar was fatally shot by a
Vancouver homeowner in the Fisher’s Landing neighborhood last month,
police said.

In that case a homeowner heard noises coming from somewhere in his
residence and confronted and shot an intruder after discovering the man
inside his garage, authorities said. Police said the suspect was also
armed.
