EUGENE, Ore. — Prosecutors cleared a Springfield woman who shot her
ex-boyfriend in the head last week after he was warned not to enter a
Eugene home.

“It appears to have been a self-defense situation,” Lane County District
Attorney Alex Gardner said Thursday.

Although no one else was in the room when the shooting occurred,
witnesses backed the account given by the woman, 27-year-old Shannon
Luanne Brandt.

Kevin Daniel Millican, 47, remains in serious condition at Sacred Heart
Medical Center, where surgeons removed a .32-caliber bullet that struck
above his right eye and lodged in the back of his skull.

“She told him not to come any closer. He saw she had a gun, and he
approached her,” Gardner said. Gardner added that Millican’s actions
“posed a substantial threat” to Brandt and the shooting was legally
justified.
