Our first victory in the 110th congress

March 1st, 2012

Dear Friends,

Late last night we secured our first victory in the 110th Congress when the Senate passed the Bennett Amendment to the Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act of 2007 by a vote of 55-43. As you know, the Bennett Amendment removed an unconstitutional provision of the bill that would have restricted the rights of American citizens to learn about pending bills and contact their elected officials with their views.

This legislative victory would not have been possible without you! Your calls and emails to your Senators were a key component of our success.

To see whether your Senator supported the Bennett Amendment please click on the following link:

Action Items:

Please contact Senators Bennett and McConnell to thank them for their leadership on this issue by calling the Capitol Switchboard 202-224-3121.

Please send your Senator a thank you letter if he/she voted in favor of the Bennett Amendment. The text of a letter is provided below and you can find your Senator’s address by clicking here.

Suggested Letter to Senators Who Voted FOR the Bennett Amendment

Dear Senator,

I want to thank you for your vote in support of passage of the Bennett Amendment to Senate Bill 1. Section 220 of S. 1 was a dangerous and unconstitutional strike against the average citizen who want to make his or her voice heard on legislative issues.

Grassroots activism is at the heart of political accountability and transparency on Capitol Hill. Thank you for supporting a measure to allow grassroots lobbying to continue.

Sincerely,
