ROCKING THE BOAT IN COLORADO

The one-year anniversary of the Columbine school shooting is fast
approaching, and one state school board member in Colorado is making waves.

Patti Johnson delivered a speech in Cincinnati last week, titled “The Real
Killers at Columbine: A Curricula Gone Bad.” She blames a curriculum that
overemphasizes death and fails to teach kids right from wrong. She cites as
evidence the popular “lifeboat scenario,” where students have to choose
which
of the four passengers is most expendable: the disabled person, the healthy
doctor, the pregnant woman, or the rich man. Said Johnson, “Eric Harris and
Dylan Klebold did their own lifeboat scenario. They didn’t like blacks,
jocks, or Christians.”

Johnson also blames the school system’s “cultural diversity” units, which
she
says are so negative that students emerge with feelings of distrust. Too
many
teachers, she says, encourage their students to question the values they’re
taught at home and push them to talk about death.

School officials, naturally, aren’t too happy with Johnson’s remarks. She
reiterated them on Wednesday during a speech in Denver. Officials say she
doesn’t know what she’s talking about. They say she’s just hungry for the
media spotlight.

Johnson isn’t exactly the most popular school board member these days. Last
year, she successfully lobbied the state board of education to issue a
statement that Ritalin and other prescription drugs shouldn’t be used to
treat schoolchildren.

So it’s no wonder that school officials have their boxers in a bunch over
Patti Johnson’s remarks. She actually wants administrators to be accountable
for the gobbledygook they pump into our kids–not just the drugs, but the
indoctrination. Those are two very valuable instruments of control for our
government schools. And they’re not going to give them up without a fight.
