(September 17, 2002) ? Two men are dead after burglaries turned violent in Rochester overnight.

A little before 2 a.m. Tuesday a man was shot dead after he broke into a home on North Street.

The homeowner apparently surprised a would-be burglar who had broken through three doors to gain access to the home. The dead man died from a single shot to the chest.

It is not clear what the burglar was after in the home.

Earlier, police received a call at 8:22 p.m. reporting a shooting at 299 Ravine Ave., reportedly as someone was trying to burglarize the residence.

However, Deputy Chief Robert Maldonado said investigators were still trying to confirm whether that was the case, as well as who did the shooting or the identity of the slain man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not release the name of a man they took in for questioning.

But he apparently was the one who originally called police about the shooting, Maldonado said. He would not say whether that man was also the shooter.

Police investigations into both shootings continue
