Stop aiding criminals

Re: Right to self-defence, Oct. 2.

Letter-writer Dylan Kome argues that the high rate of violent crime in
cities like Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and New York City are only a
function of their high populations. I’ve got news for the readers.

There are many large cities in the U.S. that are not experiencing an
epidemic in violent crime. Those cities coincidently have loosened the
gun-control measures that target law-abiding citizens, and have targeted
the criminals instead. What the politicians in those cities have come to
realize is that decent hard-working members of the community are not a
threat to anyone even if they do own a gun.

Taking away guns from that segment of the population only helps to
create a safer work environment for criminals. Disarming potential
victims is never a good idea.

The U.S. Department of Justice would agree. According to it, Americans
use firearms to defend themselves at least 6,400 times a day. Since
1991, when crime was at an all-time high in the U.S., 21 more states
have decided to allow qualified citizens the right to carry a handgun
for self-defence. Now with 48 states allowing concealed-carry, the U.S.
is enjoying a 30-year low in all types of crime. The violent-crime rate
in the U.S. has come way down while Canada’s is still rising.

This country should stop trying so hard to make us helpless against
armed criminals.
