Superintendent resigns following gun remarks

READING, Ohio (AP) — The city’s schools superintendent resigned following uproar over his suggestion to make guns available to teachers in case of attack.
School board members announced a tentative agreement Thursday under which John Varis will be placed on administrative leave immediately and vacate his office by Nov. 29. His resignation takes effect Jan. 1.
Varis has been under fire since mid-October, when he said he thought teachers should be trained to use guns and have them available in case students or others began an armed attack.
“Guns can be used to protect as well as to take lives,” Varis said then. “Why do people feel uncomfortable with the idea of defending your life or your children’s life, when the perpetrator has no constraint?”
