A Halifax man accused of threatening shoppers with a sword last month
has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for breaching a probation order.

Ryan Baker, 28, appeared in Halifax provincial court Thursday to plead
guilty to not paying restitution for a March 2005 assault and two
property damage convictions.

Looking tired and slightly dishevelled, Mr. Baker declined to say
anything when given a chance to speak.

He faces charges of mischief, resisting arrest, possessing a weapon,
theft and assault with a weapon in a Feb. 1 incident at the Halifax
Shopping Centre.

Police went to the mall at about 5:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a
man wielding a sword at shoppers. Officers used a stun gun to subdue the
man, who had stolen the 1.5-metre sword from a mall kiosk. No one was
injured.

Lawyer John Black, who appeared on Mr. Baker’s behalf, asked that
election and plea be adjourned until the accused can find another
lawyer. The judge agreed and Mr. Baker returns to court April 3.
