Robber guns down two gas jockeys; Owners of businesses in crime-ridden Surrey neighbourhood
say they’re fed up

SURREY — An elderly Surrey man was in critical condition last night after he and
a co-worker at a gas station were shot in a neighbourhood that one merchant calls
the war zone.
The two gas jockeys — one aged 70 and the other 19 — at a Tempo gas station at
108th Avenue and Scott Road were shot by a man in his 20s at about 7 p.m. Monday.
The 19-year-old clerk, who was shot in the stomach, is recovering in hospital, said
Surrey RCMP Sgt. Roger Morrow.
Police believe the same gunman committed five robberies the day before. Shots were
fired during two of the robberies and in a third, the robber pointed his gun at
a woman’s head while he grabbed her purse.
Monday night’s attempted robbery and shootings were no surprise to Brad Juckes,
who owns Blackwell Distributors, just two doors away on Scott Road.
“It has become a war zone down here,” he said as police looked for clues
in the taped-off gas station.
Juckes said he has break-ins weekly and he expects to lose $100,000 this year from
crime.
“The RCMP will not come down here at night. I’m worried about my ability
to run my business because of the RCMP’s inability to control things down here.”
He said the area is overrun with drug addicts, many of whom come into the neighbourhood
on SkyTrain, just a few blocks away.
Raj Kang who owns Pacific Western Roofing next door to the Tempo gas station, said
he is a victim of property crime almost every day. “It is a very bad area,”
he said.
