The Second Amendment – Why is this still relevant?

The Second Amendment

“A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.”
————————————————–

Why is this still relevant?

Why does the foundation and security of this republic still rest upon this sacred right?

“Citizens fight guns with fists,” screamed the headlines of the Washington Times on June 6th, 1989, when hundreds of unarmed Chinese pro-democracy demonstrators were butchered by their own government.

You say that it can’t happen here?

We say the Second Amendment is the reason why.

Did you think it was because you had an honest and trustworthy President?

What would-be tyrant would want to confront 80 million armed American citizens?

You say that the Founding Fathers only intended to empower the National Guard with these words?

We say that the National Guard didn’t exist until 100 years AFTER our Constitution was drafted.

You say, “No court has ever held the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right.”

{Also, see U.S. Vs. Timothy Joe Emerson for a recent Federal District Court decision affirming the Second Amendment as an individual right.}

You say the Second Amendment is too vague to be construed as granting the individual right to bear arms?

We say the Founding Fathers were anything but vague about what this Amendment meant for the perpetuation of liberty.

Well, listen to what they had to say, and then tell us, are you still confused about what they meant?

The Intent of the Founding Fathers

John Adams

“Arms in the hands of citizens may be used at individual discretion, and in self defense.”

Samuel Adams

“The said Constitution [shall] be never construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press, or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms,”

Thomas Jefferson

“No freeman shall be debarred the use of arms.”

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms… disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes… Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”

James Madison

[ The Constitution preserves ] the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation…(where) the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.
George Mason

“For embodying the people, a well regulated Militia, composed of the Gentlemen, Freeholders, and other Freemen was necessary to protect our ancient Laws and liberty from the standing army.”

Note: No confusion here about who the “militia” is, as opposed to who the “standing army” is!

Noah Webster

“The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States.”

“Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretence, raised in the United States. A military force, at the command of Congress, can execute no laws, but such as the people perceive to be just and constitutional; for they will possess the power, and jealousy will instantly inspire the inclination, to resist the execution of a law which appears to them unjust and oppressive.”

And now a few words from a higher authority, the Bible;

“When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace.”

Luke 11:21 (RSV)
