A 56-year-old Metro business owner shot his snub nose .38 handgun at
armed intruders from point blank range.

The bandits are still on the run, and one of them may have been injured
during the foiled robbery attempt.

“I just come out and shot him,” said Bennie.

“I’m thinking, ‘someone’s trying to kill us,’” Jane said.

Bennie Hackney is 56 years old. Bennie and his wife Jane have been
married for 35 years and have 12 grandchildren, who often visit the
family’s used car lot on Gallatin Road.

“If any of my grandkids had been here, I couldn’t have shot. I would’ve
been too scared to,” said Bennie.

It all happened Tuesday night around 6:00.

The family said the two gunmen were wearing masks. Bennie amd Jane
related their account of the night.

“The bigger one came in with gun up as he come through. I put my hand on
my gun and he stuck his gun in my face. All I saw was a gun stuck in my
face and a black guy with ski mask on. He intended to surprise us, but
he got surprised. I fired three times. I’m sure I hit him.
On the first shot, it looks like bullet came here [pointing], because
his hat flew back. Only words I heard him saying was, ‘oh s***!’ The
bullet went through this rug, hit the floor, and ricocheted off my desk
over to here. I’m mad cause they got away.”

Mr. Hackney told News 2 he’s had cars stolen off the lot before, but
never has he been face to face with an armed robber and never has he had
to fire his weapon to protect his family.

“You don’t just come in stick a gun in someone’s face and do like he did
for the first time… He knew me. No doubt.”

The suspects got away, reportedly in a white 1990′s model Nissan Maxima.
If the bandit was shot like Mr. Hackney said he was, then the robber was
either wearing a bullet proof vest or he’s in a world of hurt right now.

News 2′s sources said no one with an unexplained gun shot wound has
shown up at any of the emergency rooms around town.
