I have never needed a gun. But, I currently own two and am about to get a
third. My wife is planning on taking courses for a concealed weapons
permit.
I have been asked If I have never needed a gun ,why make such
expenditures?
My wife and I moved into a house. One night, my wife and I were
getting ready for bed when we heard the gate to our backyard slam shut.
It was unmistakable.
I grabbed the nearest long and blunt object I could find, a baseball
bat, and slowly walked down my hallway looking intently and fiercely at the
nearest body I could find.
Fortunately, no one had come into my house, and as near as I can tell, the
sound of the gate slamming was the potential invader leaving in a hurry. I
call him potential “invader” since it was evident that he attempted to open
our arcadia door. The only thing preventing him from entering was a small
screwdriver which I had lunged to secure the door (note: for some reason,
the builders reversed the arcadia door, partially, so I could not place a
stick to secure it).

How is this a gun related issue? My wife was die-hard anti-gun. She didn’t
mind if I owned one, just as long as it was in a safety deposit box, and not
in the house. Trying to maintain peace, I never forced the issue.

In the moments that followed the gate slamming, my wife realized that I was
putting my life on the line for her sake — with a bat. I am a big and
strong man, but not impervious to things like bullets and knives.
For her, in that instance, the debate of gun control was over.

See, had someone entered the house with a gun, she might have lost her
husband. Had several entered in with no gun, the odds exist that I would
not have taken all of them. And I was standing between her and danger.
She realized that she was utterly dependent upon my fighting skills, and I
was dependent on a bat. She also realized that since they had decided to
enter the house, they resolved already to break a law, intent to harm,
another, carrying a stolen gun? Why not? For them, the gun control issue
was equally resolved. He who has the guns has the control.

As a husband, who had also resolved the gun ownership issue as I walked down
the hall with a Little League tiny aluminum bat, I decided to by a hand gun.

My wife is saving up to get one for herself (though, she really likes my 9
mm Berretta). My reason for writing is to give a real life example how a
quick dose of reality overturned years of propaganda (fed to her by the
media and others) in my wife, and 15 seconds of adrenaline and fear made me
realize the importance of protecting my wife.

BTW, the Misguided Moms March, and the speeches and debates that ensued
pushed my wife even further into a Right to Self Defense position. Seems
that has happened a lot, since many women saw the flaws in their logic.
Their thinking is akin to declawing a lioness who tries to protect her cubs
against predators. The cubs die, the lioness dies, but thank goodness we
got those unregistered claws off of the streets!

Keep up the good work.

Mike
