Self Defense shooting #1

story from the Tampa Tribune:

Father Goes To Rescue Of Daughter
By JOSE PATINO GIRONA [email protected]
Published: Aug 30, 2001

TAMPA – A 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after he got in a fight
with his girlfriend and then was shot in the arm by her father, the
Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.
Wayne Warren of 3008 Spillers Ave. was arrested after being treated at Tampa
General Hospital. He was charged with battery domestic violence and burglary
of an occupied residence, said Lt. Rod Reder, a sheriff’s office spokesman.

After Warren followed his girlfriend, Arlena Ottinger, 18, to her house at
2711 N. 60th St., he banged on doors and windows, Reder said.

Her father, Arl Ottinger III, 47, came out and told him to leave, Reder
said. Warren refused and the two began arguing. Arl Ottinger then pointed a
.38-caliber handgun at Warren and when Warren allegedly threatened him,
Ottinger shot him in the arm, Reder said.

Warren was being held at the Orient Road jail; bail had not been set.
Ottinger wasn’t charged.

“He is defending his family,” Reder said. “It appears it was
justifiable.”

About 11 a.m., Warren and Arlena Ottinger began arguing at Frank’s Best
Sandwiches, Reder said. She drove off with their 10-month-old son.

Warren followed her, Reder said, and when she stopped at 60th Street and
Broadway Avenue, he ran to her car, broke a window and pulled her by the
hair. Bystanders interceded and she ran to her home with the baby. Warren
followed.

In May, Warren was charged with kidnapping and battery, but Arlena Ottinger
declined to cooperate and the charges were dropped, Reder said.

Brief from the St. Petersburg Times:

Father shoots boyfriend of teenage daughter
TAMPA — A father shot his daughter’s boyfriend Wednesday after she had fled
from him to her family’s home.

Wayne Warren, 21, of 3008 Spillers Ave. was shot once in the arm. Treated
and released from Tampa General Hospital, he was jailed and charged with
burglary and domestic violence battery, said Rod Reder of the Hillsborough
Sheriff’s Office.

Warren had been arguing about 11 a.m. Wednesday with 18-year-old Arlena
Ottinger in an east Tampa restaurant. She left with her 10-month-old baby
and started driving to her home at 2711 N 60th St., said Reder.

Warren caught up with her at 60th Street and Broadway Avenue. Reder said
that while her car was stopped, the suspect broke a window and pulled her
hair. Because bystanders interceded, she was able to flee on foot to her
home.

But the suspect followed. Her father, Arl Ottinger III, 47, told the
intruder to leave their screened-in lanai and stop banging on the door and
windows. After he refused to leave and started making threats, Ottinger shot
the man.

Reder said Warren had been charged previously with kidnapping and battering
Arlena Ottinger on May 27, but prosecutors dropped the charges because the
woman refused to cooperate.

Her father was not charged for shooting Warren, said Reder.

Self defense shooting #2
Tampa Tribune story:

Robbery Suspect Shot In Back By Hotel Owner

Published: Aug 30, 2001

TAMPA – A motel owner shot and gravely wounded a robbery suspect Wednesday
as two others fled, police said.
Gerald L. Marsh, 25, of 3723 Powhattan Ave. was hospitalized in critical but
stable condition with a gunshot wound to the back, police said.

Police said Marsh was one of three men who robbed a desk clerk at Economy
Inn, 830 W. Kennedy Blvd., about 12:30 a.m.

The hotel owner saw the men pistol-whipping his desk clerk from a security
monitor and confronted them in the parking lot, police said.

The owner fired several shots, and Marsh was struck in the back, police
said.

“This guy acted in self-defense,” police Lt. George McNamara said. The
state attorney, he added, reviews such shootings to determine whether they
were justified.

The other two men ran and hadn’t been located as of late Wednesday. The
Tampa Tribune is not naming the 40-year-old hotel owner while the suspects
remain at large.

Police described one as 18 to 25 years old, black and about 6 foot 1. He
wore a flowered shirt and denim shorts. The other suspect was described as a
black man in a red shirt.

Police recovered a 1996 Dodge Intrepid at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Tampa police at (813) 276-3200.

A staff report

Brief from the St. Petersburg Times:

Police: Motel owner shot fleeing robbery suspect
TAMPA — The owner of a motel shot one of three men trying to rob the desk
clerk early Wednesday morning, police say.

Sham Chhabria saw the robbery at the Economy Inn over a monitor at about
12:30 a.m., said police spokesman Joe Durkin. The robbers, armed with a
handgun, pistol-whipped the night desk clerk, 41-year-old Malcolm Weedman.

Chhabria rushed into the parking lot and fired three shots at the fleeing
suspects.

One of the shots struck 25-year-old Gerald L. Marsh in the back. He was
taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was in critical but stable
condition Wednesday evening.

Durkin said Marsh and two others arrived at the motel in a stolen 1996 Dodge
Intrepid, which they abandoned at the motel. Weedman apparently did not
suffer injuries that required treatment.

Marsh has an arrest record in Hillsborough County dating back to 1993 on
charges that include car theft, possession of cocaine and marijuana, and
robbery with a firearm.
