The 29-year-old resident was shot in the arm and shoulder in the shootout, and was treated and released from Parkland Memorial Hospital, police say.
Police say the man called 911 around 9 a.m. to report hearing someone breaking in the side door of his townhouse at the Kensington Square Apartments in the 15000 block of Knoll Trail. The resident, who has not been identified, was home with his wife and children at the time.
Police said the resident said he confronted a man in the living room, and the man opened fire.
The resident retreated into his bedroom, got a handgun and returned fire. One man was dead inside the residence, and a second was found dead near a hedge outside the complex.
The dead man outside had a latex glove on one hand. Another glove lay nearby, and a handgun was lying about 15 feet away.
Police spokesman Chris Gilliam said authorities are looking for a third suspect who may have left the scene in a car. The dead men have not yet been identified.
Gilliam said it is unknown if the resident knew the intruders, but burglary is a likely motive.
“A lot of burglaries happen during the day when people are usually at work,” he said.
