For the second time in less than a month, a domestic disturbance has
ended in death.
A 47-year-old man was shot and killed after attacking his former wife
with a knife late Sunday.
Police responded to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. to find the victim,
a 47-year-old female, lying on the front lawn of her relatives’ house
with slash wounds to her shoulder.
The body of her attacker lay near her, a knife still in his hand,
Lubbock police spokesman Bill Morgan said at the scene.
Morgan said the victim arrived at the house, got out of her car and was
accosted by her estranged husband, who apparently had been waiting for
her in the shadows. He reportedly threatened her with a small,
three-inch, lock-blade knife.
According to Morgan, neighbors were alerted as the woman began screaming
when the attacker tried to force her into her car. The man then tackled
her on the front lawn and began assaulting her with the knife, Morgan
said.
After hearing the attack, a 74-year-old relative of the victim appeared
from the house with a medium-caliber, semi-automatic handgun. He
reportedly shot the attacker once in the head, Morgan said.
The woman suffered a severe slash wound to her shoulder and was
transported to Covenant Medical Center where she was still undergoing
treatment at 12:30 a.m. today.
Morgan said there have been no arrests made pending an investigation by
the District Attorney’s office.
Injuries to the woman do not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
Neighbors living across the street said they thought they heard a
firecracker then came out to find the victim laying on the ground.
Morgan said that a temporary restraining order against the estranged
husband had expired on June 24.
