Metro/State briefs San Antonio Express-News Man, 24, acquitted in murder case

After deliberating for more than seven hours over two days, a jury
Monday acquitted a 24-year-old San Antonio man of murder and aggravated
assault in a double shooting at a quincea?era party last year that
left one man dead and a second injured.

The 226th District Court jury found Ramon Escobedo not guilty in the
Oct. 6 death of Herman Salas, 33, and the shooting of Ricardo Ramirez,
25.

An elated Escobedo embraced his attorney, Rafael Leal, upon hearing the
verdict.

Leal had argued that his client shot the two men in self-defense when an
intoxicated group of people began chasing him from the party like “lions
pursuing prey” after a heated argument.
Salas suffered a gunshot wound to the eye and died at a local hospital.
Ramirez was shot in the hip.

Leal said Escobedo was in fear for his safety and fired the shots in
self-defense. He claimed his client did not intend to kill or harm the
men.
Prosecutor Holly Shull argued the case was not one of self-defense, but
of two unarmed men being gunned down in the street after a disturbance
erupted at the party in the 200 block of Parkview.
